Student Research League (SRL)

The Student Research League (SRL) is a partnership between two-year college students and Faculty Mentors who are seeking STEM knowledge through an AMATYC approved research program. The Student Research League (SRL) will require AMATYC Faculty Mentors to sponsor a team of one to three mathematics students from their college to participate in addressing a designed research STEM Challenge Problem. The student(s) will have eighteen days to complete the task.

The Student Research League's main goals are:

  1. To encourage research problem solving and to motivate an interest in extracurricular mathematics activities among two-year college students.
  2. To provide an opportunity for two-year college students to compete in a national mathematical modeling and research contest.
  3. To reward outstanding student research problem-solvers and math modelers through a scholarship and prizes to be given to the top participants, both individual and team, in League competition, and to recognize colleges with outstanding mathematics students through national awards.

The deadline to submit your entry was April 8.  The  competition for 2025 is complete.  Finalists and the Team Champion will be announced at the 2025 AMATYC Conference in November.

As the use of AI tools, including large language models (LLMs) and generative AI-assisted technologies, has grown over the past year, we aim to discourage their use in the spirit of the Student Research League's objectives and goals. There are many aspects of model development where human creativity and teamwork are essential, and the reliance on AI tools introduces risks. Therefore, we advise exercising caution and refraining from using AI assistance. Should a team use any AI tools, it is imperative that they be open and honest about all instances of AI tool utilization. Transparency in a team's submission increases the likelihood of their work being trusted and appreciated. Such disclosures are crucial for understanding the development of intellectual work and for the proper acknowledgment of contributions. Without open and clear citations and references regarding the role of AI tools, there is a higher risk that certain passages and work could be identified as plagiarism and disqualified, or that the work could be discounted by the evaluators because it does not sound like it was written by the students.

Please convey this to your students. We will re-evaluate the usage of AI tools for the 2026 SRL, but for this year, we would like teams to avoid using any AI tools.
