Mathematics Leadership Excellence Award
The Mathematics Leadership Excellence Award (MLE Award), formerly known as the Mathematics Excellence Award (ME Award) prior to 2024, is intended for educators who have made outstanding contributions through leadership in mathematics or mathematics education in the first two years of college. MLE award recipients are recognized in even-numbered years.
The following information is to be submitted for each nominee. The nominator must submit all items below as a single PDF document using the Nomination Form link. All letters require a signature. Electronic signatures are acceptable.
- A formal letter of recommendation from the nominator. The letter of recommendation may not exceed 3 pages.
- Nominee's resume or vita, not to exceed 3 pages.
- Two additional formal letters of recommendation, each no longer than 3 pages. The letters of recommendation should be submitted on college letterhead, when appropriate. Ideally, the letters of recommendation will elaborate on items from the resume or point out additional exemplary characteristics of the nominee, rather than reiterating items from the resume. At least one of the letters must be from a region other than the nominee's AMATYC region.

What is the AMATYC Mathematics Leadership Excellence Award?

This recognition of excellence may be awarded every two years at the AMATYC Annual Conference held in even-numbered years.
What are the criteria used to select a recipient?
Award criteria include: national reputation, leadership and activities in professional organizations at regional, state, and national scale, professional talks and presentations, products such as books, and articles and other items, awards and grants received, and teaching expertise.
Who reviews nominees?
A committee made up of a representative from each of the eight AMATYC regions is elected at the annual conference in even-numbered years. The committee is chaired, through the completion of its work, by the person who is currently the immediate past-president. The committee reviews nominee packets based upon the criteria cited above, and presents the top three candidates to the AMATYC Executive Board. The Executive Board selects the individual, if any, to receive the award from the top three candidates.

How are Awardees and Non-Awardees notified?
After the AMATYC Executive Board makes the decision at its spring Board meeting, the AMATYC President notifies the awardee, if any, and the MLE Award Committee Chair notifies the nominators of non-awardees. Non-awardees are not notified directly.

- Current Executive Board members are ineligible to be nominated.
- Former board members are ineligible to be nominated until at least three years have elapsed since leaving the board.

- Members of AMATYC may nominate themselves.
- Current Executive Board members cannot submit a nomination.
- The nominator is responsible for securing documents to support the nomination.
- Nominees will NOT be informed by the committee chair that they have been nominated.
