Dr. Martin "Marty" Romero is a Mathematics Professor at Santa Ana College with over 30 years of experience teaching mathematics and teacher education, from middle school through university. He serves as the Mathematics Faculty Advisor for the UCLA Mathematics Project and has taught in the Cal State System, UCLA, and in classrooms across East and South Los Angeles. He views mathematics not as a gatekeeper, but as a tool for social justice and equity. His current work centers on the Humanizing, Student-Centered, Cognitively Guided, and Critically Empowering (HSCE) Framework, a heart-led effort to teach with, and for, his students. He holds a BS in Mathematics from UCLA, an MS in Mathematics from CSULA, and a PhD in Education from UCLA with an emphasis in urban schooling and math education.

ABSTRACT: What do the most effective math classrooms have in common?  They see students clearly, build belonging deliberately and connect mathematical learning to students' power to shape their own lives. This webinar introduces the HSCE Framework - Humanizing, Student-Centered, Cognitively Guided, and Critically Empowering - a research-grounded approach to mathematics instruction that integrates evidence from cognitive science, hope theory, and equity pedagogy. Practical strategies applicable to any mathematics course at any level will be shared.
