AMATYC Volunteer Positions

AMATYC Volunteer Opportunities

AMATYC is always looking for volunteers to support the organization. If you have an interest, we can probably find a volunteer position for you.  Some volunteer positions are for a brief time and a specific task (e.g. reviewing and approving the Delegate Assembly minutes), and others are ongoing (e.g. creating problems for the Student Mathematics League).

Want to know more? Ask a volunteer you know, or email your Regional VP, the AMATYC President (president@amatyc.org) or the Executive Director (debora.rimkus@amatyc.org). Not all positions have openings at this time, but this page will be updated as volunteers are needed.

AMATYC Representative to The Joint Committee on Women in the Mathematical Sciences

AMATYC representatives to the JCW are approved by the AMATYC board for three-year terms.  Since each member society of JCW has two representatives on the committee, every third year there will not be a new AMATYC representative.  Membership terms are from February 1st of the initial year through January 31st three years later.

Overview of responsibilities:

Participate in JCW meetings: There are three scheduled virtual meetings each year (February, April, and September) with a summer virtual meeting scheduled as needed.   There is an optional meeting held during the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in January for those members who are attending JMM, This meeting is held primarily to discuss the details of the session proposal for the following year's JMM.  The sponsoring societies do not pay travel costs to the JMM.

Communication with AMATYC leadership: The representatives should serve as a conduit of information between the JCW and AMATYC leadership.  At a minimum, copies of the minutes of meetings should be provided to the AMATYC board.  The minutes should be accompanied by a document highlighting any issues or actions that would be of specific interest or requesting action by AMATYC. In addition, this correspondence should include a request for any information or questions that should be passed back to the Committee.  The two AMATYC representatives should confer following each JCW meeting about who will correspond with the appropriate individuals, and both representatives should sign off on the reports to the board. Reports should be submitted (on a schedule determined by the society to the person selected by the society.)

Participate in activities of the JCW:  AMATYC  representatives to the JCW may serve on task forces or committees, organize invited sessions for JMM or other conferences, forward relevant information or issues as they arise to the JCW email list (JCW-COMM@LISTS.AMS.ORG) be the chair or co-chair of the JCW or serve as webmaster or FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/JCWMath) administrator. Representatives should also participate in JCW projects.

Assist in transition of new membership:  When a new JCW representative from AMATYC   is appointed, the representative whose term will overlap with this new representative should orient the new representative by providing a copy of this orientation guide (updated as appropriate), minutes of the previous meetings, and offering other assistance.
