AMATYC President
Welcome to the website of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). We invite you to explore our website. Our hope is that you find this site useful and informative.

AMATYC is devoted to the teaching and learning of mathematics, as well as issues facing mathematics educators, in the first two years of college. While many of our members are employed at two-year colleges, we also have many 4-year college and university faculty who are long-time members.

Since its beginnings in 1974, a major focus of AMATYC's mission has been offering professional development to mathematics faculty. This includes our premiere annual conference held in November each year, our webinar series, a webinar library of previously presented webinars, forums and book clubs, and the conferences of our affiliate organizations.

AMATYC provides additional opportunities for learning and growing. For example, members new to the profession can apply to participate in a two-year professional development and leadership program called Project ACCCESS, where, in addition to joining a cohort and experiencing activities tailored to those who are new to the profession, fellows receive significant funding to defray the costs of attending the annual conference during their fellowship.
AMATYC has numerous publications including a refereed journal, MathAMATYC Educator, available to members, standards documents Crossroads, Beyond Crossroads, and IMPACT, and a newsletter, AMATYC News. In addition, AMATYC has issued position statements that can be used in your department, college, or state to help change policies in support of improving student learning and the teaching environment.

Another major focus of AMATYC is building community.  We have several academic networks (ANets) each focused on a specific theme such as mathematical pathways, placement and assessment, innovative technology, developmental mathematics, statistics, technical math, and many more. These groups, which are free to join, allow members to discuss complex issues they face on a regular basis. To aid in these discussions, there is an online community platform, my.amatyc.org, where you can engage in discussions with other mathematics educators about issues that interest you. Each ANet has a community on myAMATYC where you will find discussions, repositories of materials in a library, and a search tool that allows you to connect with other members of AMATYC.

AMATYC also has something to offer for students. AMATYC holds three student mathematics competitions each year. The first is our long-standing, two-part Student Mathematics League enjoyed by close to 200 colleges and thousands of students each year. The second is a competition focused on authentic problem solving and mathematical modeling, the Student Research League. The number of students competing in this competition has been growing and provides community college students the opportunity to work with a mentor while solving problems from the real world.  Our newest competition is the Two-Year College DataFest.  The virtual DataFest competition encourages problem-solving in statistics and data science through data analysis, and is offered in conjunction with the American Statistical Association's in-person DataFest. AMATYC piloted this competition in 2022 and 2023, and is excited to open it to all two-year colleges in 2024.

I hope you find that AMATYC offers those engaged in the teaching and learning of mathematics a year-round professional development experience.
