Welcome, AMATYC works with other mathematical organizations involved in mathematics education in the first two years of college. One such organization is Mu Alpha Theta. Mu Alpha Theta is a non-secret organization whose purpose is the promotion of scholarship in, and enjoyment and understanding of, mathematics among high school and two-year college students. AMATYC is an official partner with Mu Alpha Theta along with the MAA, NCTM, and SIAM.
Interested in starting a Mu Alpha Theta Chapter at your two-year college? Below is some information that may help you plan before you start the process.
  • Two-year colleges must offer at least three courses beyond pre-calculus, which include calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, or statistics.
  • The college must employ at least one teacher whose primary teaching field is mathematics and who has completed an undergraduate mathematics major or its equivalent at an accredited college or university.
  • The president of the college, or other chief administrative officer of the institution must approve the chartering of the chapter at the college.
  • The petition for a charter is completed online on the Mu Alpha Theta website (below).
  • Payment of a one-time $25 chapter fee and one-time $10/student member fee is paid with a college check or college credit card providing lifetime membership.
  • There are no annual dues for the chapter nor students.
  • A completed petition, charter members' names and graduation years (submitted via Excel file found online), and payment are required to fully initiate a chapter.
  • One reason to have a two-year college chapter is students who were members of Mu Alpha Theta in high school are eligible for membership in their college chapter.
  • Any two-year college with accreditation from a recognized accrediting agency and offering courses in mathematics may petition to have a chapter, provided it meets the following minimum requirements:
  • Two-year students are eligible if they have had at least one mathematics course at or above the College Algebra/Precalculus level and at least a 3.0 GPA overall in all Two-Year college mathematics courses at or above the College Algebra/Precalculus level (minimum requirements).
  • Be sure to visit with college student services to determine additional requirements.

The best part, MAΘ is open to all students (eligibility requirements hold), not just mathematics majors!

If you have questions about starting a MAΘ Chapter at your two-year college, email the AMATYC Representative for Mu Alpha Theta, Mari Menard, mualphatheta@amatyc.org.
