Visiting China as Part of Community College International Development, Andrew Bulleri, Howard Community College
The presenter will discuss a trip to China in July 2001 during which six educational institutions were visited by 25 faculty members from many different fields including two in mathematics. The educational aspects of the trip will be emphasized.

Introductory statistics is ideal for reinforcing multi-discipline skills such as writing, computing and oral communication. The presentation will include historical background and a derivation of Euler's constant, using the harmonic series and logarithms. Calculus teachers who teach sequences and series will find this presetnation especially useful.

The presenters will share their experience in using a variety of activities found to be effective in engaging students in statistics. The presentation involves basing a first level college statistics course curriculum on currently available mathlets. Mathlets (mathematics applets) are platform-independent, web-based, small interactive teaching and learning tools. They enable students to participate in interactive student-centered activities and enhance learning through visualizations and experimentation.

Two CRAFTY workshops were held in October 2000 and a national conference in May 2002. These meetings prompted dialogue on the mathematics needed for advanced technology programs. Recommendations from these meetings will be disseminated and discussed. These recommendations should affect the mathematics curriuclum at all levels.
