Information for Letter of Support
AMATYC Project ACCCESS (Advancing Community College Careers: Education, Scholarship, and Service) is a professional development and mentoring program for two-year college mathematics faculty in the first three years of their full-time professional careers. The goal of the project is to facilitate current and continued professional growth for a cadre of two-year college mathematics faculty who will become the leaders of their profession.
Fellows will attend two consecutive AMATYC national meetings where they will participate in a specially developed workshop as well as regular conference activities. Fellows are required to attend an AMATYC Affiliate, MAA Section meeting, or NCTM Regional meeting near their home institution between November, of the current year and November of the following year. For the duration of the project, an electronic network will link ACCCESS Fellows with each other and with a group of distinguished mathematics educators. All Fellows will develop, implement, and evaluate a project at their home institution, as an integral part or their professional development experience.
What costs are paid by the participant's home institution?
The cost is shared by the participant’s home institution and the AMATYC Foundation. The participant's home institution is expected to cover costs of: the participant's transportation for two consecutive AMATYC conferences, meals not provided by AMATYC, and the cost for the participant to attend a local conference which occurs in the year between the two AMATYC conferences.
We anticipate the total institutional expense will be around $2000.
In a letter of support for your faculty member:
* Please verify that the applicant (1) has a full-time renewable contract at your institution and that this contract was effective no earlier than Fall term, 2014; (2) has not previously held a full-time renewable contract at a community or technical college or other associate degree-granting institution; and (3) has at least a master's degree in mathematics or a related field.
* Please outline the specific financial support your institution will provide for the applicant’s participation. It is also important that Fellows have non-financial support to implement alternative teaching techniques and carry out a professional development project during the Fellowship year. Please describe how such activities will be supported by the department.
Thank you for your willingness to support your new faculty in this valuable program.
