Mathematics Excellence Award Recipient

The 2012 Mathematics Excellence (ME) award was presented to an outstanding mathematics educator in Jacksonville. This award is given in even-numbered years and is intended for educators who have made outstanding contributions to mathematics or mathematics education at the two-year college level.

Martha Goshaw

Martha Goshaw exemplifies what it means to be a professional mathematics educator. Throughout her career she has continued to balance her work with professional organizations and as an author and consultant with her dedication to improving the experiences of students in the classroom. Martha is currently a professor of Mathematics at Seminole State College where she has taught since August 2000. Before coming to Florida, she taught for 25 years at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville, Virginia.

AMATYC is appreciative of Martha’s involvement in our national organization as well as our affiliates. She has served as Secretary on the AMATYC Executive Board for six years and has represented both Virginia and Florida in the Delegate Assembly. She has helped rewrite the AMATYC constitution and by-laws and has served on numerous committees for the organization. Her work with AMATYC affiliates has also been exemplary, having served as president of both the Virginia (VMATYC) and Florida (FTYCMA) affiliates.

Martha is the author of Concepts of Calculus with Applications, a text for applied calculus and is working on another for Finite Mathematics. She has written numerous articles for professional journals including the AMATYC Review and The Mathematics Teacher.

Martha has a well-deserved reputation as an innovator in the classroom who is focused on student understanding and improving student success. She continues to be a trendsetter in mathematics education as shown in her work in the 1990s to incorporate technology in the classroom through her current work with both online and hybrid classes. Martha is anxious to share her experiences and knowledge and has served as a mentor to numerous individuals entering our profession. Her excellence in the classroom has been recognized not only with AMATYC’s Teaching Excellence Award but also with teaching awards from NISOD and FTYCMA.

Martha is a native of West Virginia, having received her B.S. in mathematics from West Virginia Wesleyan College and her M.S. in math from West Virginia University. She also has an Ed.S. from the University of Virginia and has completed all the coursework for a doctorate in Mathematics Education.
