SUSAN L. FORMAN RECEIVES 2002 AMATYC MATHEMATICS EXCELLENCE AWARD

AMATYC President Philip Mahler presented the 2002 Mathematics Excellence Award to Professor Susan L. Forman of Bronx Community College, City University of New York at the 2002 AMATYC Annual Conference in Phoenix, AZ, on November 16, 2002.

Since 1970, Professor Forman has been a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Bronx Community College. She has also held positions as Senior Program Officer, Charles A. Dana Foundation; Director of Postsecondary Programs, Mathematical Sciences Education Board, National Research Council; and Program Officer, Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, U.S. Department of Education. Forman holds a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics Education from Columbia University, an M.A. degree in Mathematics from Lehman College, City University of New York, and a B.A. degree in Mathematics from the State University of New York-Albany. Frequent collaborators include Lynn A. Steen of St. Olaf College and Sol Garfunkel of COMAP.

Professor Forman has provided national leadership to mathematics education as well as to mathematics and mathematics education professional societies. A nominator wrote, "Although she is a fierce advocate for two-year colleges, Susan has always looked at mathematics education as just one piece of a bigger enterprise. It is this instinct to reach out and make connections that characterizes her leadership in mathematics."

The AMATYC Mathematics Excellence Award is presented every other year to an educator who has made outstanding contributions to mathematics or mathematics education at the two-year college. Selection criteria include national reputation, leadership and activities in professional organizations, awards and grants received, publications, professional activities on a regional, state, and national scale, and other contributions to mathematics or mathematics education.
