| Academic
Committee Meetings |
|
Participation in AMATYC academic committees provides members
with opportunities to learn more about an area of interest and share
expertise with others. Academic committees develop position statements,
work on projects, and serve in an advisory role to the AMATYC Executive
Board and the Delegate Assembly. Each committee meets at least once
during the annual conference. Committee meetings are open to all interested
individuals and provide opportunities to become more involved in AMATYC.
Check the program listing for the scheduled times of the seven academic
committee meetings: Developmental Mathematics, Division and Department
Issues, Innovative Pedagogy Strategies, Mathematics for AAS Programs,
Mathematics Intensive/College Mathematics, Placement and Assessment,
and Teacher Preparation.
There are four themed sessions Thursday morning. All four
begin at 8:30 am and feature 15-minute presentations with a 5-minute
break between presentations. “Elections and Balloting” will focus
on ways to explore elections and balloting in a statistics class.
Is there a correct way to count votes? How do pollsters use the margin
of error to draw inferences and project winners? These and other questions
will be answered in this themed session. “Applications in Action”
features a best classroom activity from each of six experienced technical
mathematics instructors. Copies of materials or links to the necessary
websites will be provided. “Math on the Web: Tools, Techniques, and
Observations” presents nine talks on the teaching and learning of
mathematics through web resources and approaches. Presentations include
trends and techniques in distance education as well as tools and technologies
to facilitate success. Resources will be shared. “Mathematics Placement
and Assessment and Beyond Crossroads” explores strategies in
mathematics placement and assessment that are aligned with recommendations
found in AMATYC’s Beyond Crossroads.
Take advantage of three specially designed sessions organized and
presented by members of the AMATYC Executive Board. These sessions
will answer your questions about AMATYC and assist you in making
the most of the professional development opportunities that are
available to you during the conference and throughout the year.
On Thursday at 8:15 am, Mike Hardie (West Regional VP) and Ruth
Collins (Mid- Atlantic Regional VP) will host “AMATYC 101 — Enhancing
Your First Conference Experience.” If you are new to AMATYC or attending
your first conference, join Mike and Ruth to learn how to maximize
your conference experience. Meet other first time attendees to the
conference, enjoy some spirited games, perhaps win a prize, and
get all of your AMATYC questions answered. They look forward to
meeting you there.
On Friday at 1:00 pm catch “AMATYC 201 — Professional Opportunities
Through AMATYC” presented by Jane Tanner (Northeast Regional VP)
and Peter Wildman (Central Regional VP). Learn about the work of
AMATYC’s committees, discuss professional development opportunities,
and find out how to get more involved in AMATYC.
Started at our conference in Cincinnati but missed in Minneapolis
we now bring back “AMATYC 299 — Leadership and Getting Involved,”
part three of the series on Saturday at 1:15 pm. Learn about your
own leadership styles and what your opportunities are for becoming
a leader in AMATYC. Bring your questions, meet new friends, and
learn about the benefits available to you through your membership
in AMATYC.
This session on Friday at 2:15 pm will feature past-participants
of the MAC3 project giving short presentations
about the projects they developed while attending a MAC3
Institute. The presenters will share what went well, what did not
go as planned, and the best practices in creating and implementing
interdisciplinary curricula.
What new projects related to mathematics education are your
colleagues involved in around the country? Visit this poster session
Thursday afternoon and see active funded projects in curriculum development,
teacher preparation, technology and more. Principal Investigators
funded by any sources — local college, foundations, or national government
funding agencies — will showcase their projects that have an impact
on mathematics in the two-year college. You will find many ideas to
enhance your students’ experiences.

Department/Division Chairs’ Colloquium |
|
The Department/Division Chairs’ Colloquium will be held
on Thursday from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. This colloquium provides an
opportunity to dialogue with other department leaders in an informal,
but structured setting. Learn what other mathematics departments are
doing, what challenges they are facing, and how they are addressing
the implementation of Beyond Crossroads. Get ideas that you
can implement at your campus and share your experiences.
