The BC Way: Embracing Change for Continuous Improvement

Full implementation of the standards outlined in Beyond Crossroads includes making a commitment to continuous improvement in instruction. Come to beautiful Cape Cod to deepen that commitment.
This two-day workshop will have multiple sessions from which to choose. Faculty teams are encouraged to attend, but individuals are welcome as well!

Goals for Attendees

  • Engage in discussions of the messages of Beyond Crossroads and attend sessions that illustrate implementation of Beyond Crossroads recommendations.
  • Discuss assessment strategies at the class, course, and programs levels which support the Scholarship of Teaching.
  • Use one of the Beyond Crossroads Implementation Cycles to create an implementation plan for a project of choice.
  • Participate in a workshop web site to follow-up and collaborate on the participant's project.

Conference Site and Lodging

The conference will take place on scenic Cape Cod, Massachusetts. With its quaint small-town atmosphere, long sandy beaches, scenic harbors, and fried clams and lobster specialties, “the Cape” is a world famous tourist destination.

The workshop will be held on the campus of Cape Cod Community College. Lodging will be at a beach front resort motel. Attendees can lengthen their stay before and after the workshop.

Participants should make hotel reservations at the The Corsair & Cross Rip Oceanfront, 41 Chase Ave. Dennisport, MA 02639, Call 508-398-2279 or Toll Free 1-800-345-5140 for reservations or e-mail: info@corsaircrossrip.com.  A block of rooms have been reserved for workshop participants. Rooms will be reserved with a deposit for each room at the first night rate, $95, or $115 for guaranteed ocean view room. These prices do not include include taxes, which is currently 9.7%.

Make it a Vacation!

Cape Cod is a major tourist attraction. Come early or stay after! Clam and lobster dinners in the many "clam shacks." Beautiful beaches and national parks for walking. Drive out to scenic Provincetown. Just do a web search on "what is there to do on Cape Cod?" to see what we mean.

You can reserve rooms at the hotel before or after the conference night, Thursday June 11. The rates quoted above apply except that Friday and Saturday rates are $20 higher.

Registration Fee / Travel

This workshop is subsidized by a grant, so we have been able to hold the registration fee very low. The registration fee is $25 for AMATYC members and $105 for nonmembers.

Travel must be arranged by the attendee. If you do not live in driving distance, you could fly to Boston or Providence, and drive via auto rental.

Speakers and Agenda (Draft Agenda)

Keynote speakers will include Pat McKeague, noted speaker and author; Rikki Blair, AMATYC President; Rob Farinelli, AMATYC President-Elect; and other session speakers. In addition to work sessions to create an implementation plan for a project of choice, discussions will focus on planning and implementing change, technology, and assessment.

Registration Information and Timeline

Questions?

  1. Do I need to have a specific project in mind before I arrive?
    No
  2. Do I need to come as part of a team?
No, individuals are welcome. We encourage teams because, let's face it, effecting change is best done when more than one department member is involved. BUT we definitely welcome individuals!
  3. Do I have to be a member of AMATYC?
No, but the registration fee is higher for nonmembers. Why not join, then register!
  4. So what does it cost, in total?
If you live close by, one night's lodging and the registration. But we recommend staying Friday night as well, unless you live close by. The hotel provides breakfast, and the workshop will provide lunch on Thursday and Friday, and dinner at a Thursday evening group event.

The Beyond Crossroads Summer Workshops are partially funded by NSF Grant DUE7428-0410842.
