What is AMATYC?

The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) is the only organization exclusively devoted to providing a national forum for the improvement of mathematics education in the first two years of college. AMATYC has more than 2,200 individual members and approximately 150 institutional members in the United States and Canada.

The 44 affiliate organizations, serving 47 states and one Canadian province, form a leadership pool and information network that is coordinated by AMATYC and is dedicated to meeting the challenges facing two-year college mathematics education.

What is the Mission of AMATYC?

The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) mission is to promote and increase awareness of the role of two-year colleges in mathematics education, and to:

  • Ensure the preparation of scientifically and technologically literate citizens who are capable of making educated decisions, who have skills needed by business and industry, and who will continue to educate themselves;
  • Lead the development and implementation of curricular, pedagogical, and assessment standards for two-year college mathematics education;
  • Assist in the preparation and continuing professional development of a competent and diverse mathematics faculty skilled in a variety of teaching and learning techniques;
  • Serve as a network for communication, policy determination, and action among faculty, affiliates, and other professional organizations; and
  • Communicate two-year college mathematics perspectives in public, business, and professional sectors.

What is the Role of AMATYC?

In addition to providing high quality professional development for mathematics faculty, AMATYC promotes and participates in national initiatives that benefit lower division collegiate mathematics education. AMATYC is a member of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences and the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education and is an Education Associate of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
