Many college’s travel and professional development budgets have been considerably reduced. Regardless of the merits of the AMATYC Annual Conference (and we think there are many!), you may need to justify you attending to your administrator. Here are some things you will want to consider:
Focus on what you will specifically bring back to your department and college.
Offer to prepare and deliver and short presentation and Q&A to your colleagues to share what you learned and the resources you have discovered. This way others will get the benefits of your attendance.
Clearly articulate how your attendance will allow you to create a network of colleagues about the country that you will be able to contact throughout the year.
Explain how you will gain insight into the experiences of others who face challenges similar to your college.
Discuss how your attendance will raise the profile of your department and college.
The conference provides an opportunity to step back and reflect on your job and the bigger picture of your profession.
Share your plans as to how your classes will be covered while you attend the conference.
